Alfamén, a small agricultural town of roughly 1,500 inhabitants in the Campo de Cariñena region, has undergone an extraordinary transformation in recent years. Its streets are now home to over 50 monumental murals painted across the facades of houses, public buildings and industrial spaces — making it one of the most surprising open-air urban art museums in Spain. What began as a modest community initiative has grown into an internationally recognised project that attracts artists and visitors from across Europe.

The Alfamén Urban Art Festival (Festival de Arte Urbano de Alfamén) was launched to revitalise the town's public spaces, combat rural depopulation and create a cultural attraction that would draw visitors to the area. The concept was simple: invite talented muralists and graffiti artists to transform blank walls into works of art, giving them complete creative freedom. The results exceeded all expectations. Today, Alfamén's murals range from photorealistic portraits and surrealist dreamscapes to bold abstract compositions and tributes to Aragonese rural life.

Alfamén's Urban Art Route

The town has a marked Urban Art Route (Ruta de Arte Urbano) that guides visitors through the best murals. The route is about 2.5 kilometres long and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to complete at a leisurely pace, with plenty of stops for photos. Information panels at key points provide details about the artists and the techniques used.

• "La Mirada del Tiempo" (The Gaze of Time): A hyper-realistic portrait of an elderly farmer by the Aragonese artist Mónica Muro — one of the most photographed murals in the village.
• "Cosecha de Sueños" (Harvest of Dreams): A vibrant, dreamlike depiction of the region's vineyards by the Valencian collective Los Murs. The deep purples and greens echo the Garnacha grapes that define Cariñena wines.
• "Raíces" (Roots): A striking black-and-white mural by Madrid artist Sfhir that intertwines human figures with the root systems of ancient olive trees, celebrating the connection between people and the land.
• "El Vuelo" (The Flight): An enormous mural on the side of the old grain silo, depicting a flock of starlings swirling into a vortex. The sense of motion is breathtaking.
• "Mujer Rural" (Rural Woman): A tribute to the women who have sustained rural life in Aragon for generations, by the Zaragoza-based artist Susana Sanz.

New murals are added each year during the annual Urban Art Festival, which typically takes place in late spring or early summer. If you time your visit to coincide with the festival, you can watch the artists at work and sometimes even participate in workshops.

Beyond the Murals

Alfamén is also the gateway to the Cariñena wine region, one of Spain's oldest Denominations of Origin. Several bodegas in and around the town offer tours and tastings. The local cooperative, Bodegas San Alejandro, produces excellent Garnacha-based wines at remarkably reasonable prices. How to Get to Alfamén from Zaragoza

By car, take the A-2 motorway in the direction of Madrid. Exit at kilometre 314 (Alfamén) and follow the local road into the village. The journey takes about 35 minutes. Parking is easy and free in the village. By public transport, there are regular buses from Zaragoza's Delicias station to Alfamén operated by Grupo Samar — the journey takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately €5 each way. There are roughly six buses per day on weekdays, with a reduced service on weekends.
